Black Math Horseman – Wyllt
In the world of band names that make no sense, Black Math Horseman makes a dash for the head of the pack (likely has something to do with Welsh mythology, but I’m not investigating). Their debut album Wyllt channels the psychedelia necessary to connect those three words into something coherent. Wyllt definitely relies on textures and feel of the music rather than on particular riffs, but it definitely has a deep down n’ doomy feel. Makes it hard to place. It’s murkiness is very welcome, especially since it’s usually accompanied by dreamy guitar overtones and far-away vocals, giving the music a two-layered feeling. Rarely crushes, but these four definitely know what they’re doing. Scott Reeder was twisting the knobs on this one, definitely a good choice as his TunnelVision Brilliance had a lot of the same ethereal quality, though without BMH’s darkness. If you’re a fan of Grails’ early material, this is definitely worth checking out.
