Eagle Twin – The Unkindness of Crows

Murky and heavy usually go hand in hand, and on Eagle Twin’s debut it’s tough to figure out where one ends and the other begins. It’s like being drowned in tar and at the same time, it’s like watching someone being drowned in tar; there’s definitely a deep power here, a helplessness you can only feel as the victim with an awe you can only witness. Other doom and sludge bands have a reputation for repeating riffs, but with Eagle Twin this becomes the central form, a chanting structure that makes every repetition stronger than the last. “Carry On, King of Carrion” is a top track, not only for its titanic main riff with the syncopated fake-out ending, but because the simple fact that “carry on” and “carrion” can be pronounced the same way, intensifying that repetition. Gentry Densley of Ascend (where he teamed up with Greg Anderson of Sunn 0)))) is on the strings for this outfit, so if you liked Ascend’s Ample Fire Within, there’s something for you here. Fans of Om should also give Eagle Twin a go, especially if you’re looking for that chanting theme taken from the mountains into the swamp.
